Distillery: Heritage Distilling Co. (HDC)
Proof: 92
Age: NAS
Mashbill: 68% Corn, 27% Rye, 7% Malted Barley
BACKGROUND: Heritage Distilling Co. operates out of Washington and Oregon. There are a few unique and cool aspects that I noticed about this distillery. They’re a majority women owned enterprise. HDC has a patented program called the Cask Club that allows its members to essentially create they’re very own product. It This sample was graciously given to us at no cost by the company. We thank them for allowing us to review this with no reservations. HDC’s Dual Barrel Collection is a unique expression of Bourbon and Rye finished in Orange extract barrels.
NOSE: Straight orange on the nose with some ethanol burn in the background. Very light and difficult to pull any other notes besides orange (18/25)
PALATE: Again, the orange is really dominant. It feels like we just ate pop rocks as there is a strong tangy feel. There are faint notes of rye spice and oak but overall it’s mostly orange. It has a very light mouthfeel (29/40)
FINISH: The finish is short lived and burns a little bit. The orange notes are still present on our taste buds so it’s hard to pull any other notes (18/25)
VALUE: At an SRP of $55 it is overpriced. We think it should be priced at around $30 (7/10)
Overall: 72/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: This is a very unique whiskey being finished in Orange extract but the orange is overpowering and leaves this as a one note bourbon. I’m looking forward to trying this in an Old Fashioned but that would be the only way I drink it
