Micro Monday Review #68 Still Austin's Distillery Reserve Series Monster Mash

Updated: Feb 21, 2021

Distillery: Still Austin Whiskey Co.

Proof: 107.1

Age: 2 Yrs 2 Months

Mashbill: Undisclosed 5 Grain mash of white corn, wheat, rye, malted barley, malted rye

BACKGROUND: Still ATX is the first craft whiskey distillery based out of Austin, TX. Whiskey legend, master blender, Nancy Fraley, approves every release from the distillery. They are an eco-friendly, sustainable, 100% Texas whiskey distillery who do slow-water reduction during their aging process to produce a unique, authentic whiskey. When they launched the distillery they were not sure what their mashbill would be but tried multiple. As the whiskeys aged, they eventually found their mashbill. However, they had all of this other whiskey and were not sure what to do with it. They decided to blend the barrels together to create this “Monster Mash” which was an extremely limited release of only 414 barrels.

NOSE: Balanced, smooth, and sweet with notes of rich caramel, sweet cream, light rye spice, candied cherry. The proof is lying in the background just tempting you to sip (22/25)

PALATE: Rye spice kicks off the palate but it opens up to some sweet vanilla, caramel, candied pecans, and dark chocolate. The proof leaves your mouth tingling and adds a nice chewiness to it (35/40)

FINISH: The finish carries some of the bitter dark chocolate notes but then opens up to charred oak, tannins, cracked pepper, leather, and some smokiness (20/25)

VALUE: It’s a slightly expensive whiskey at $100 but it is very unique and delicious. You also will never be able to buy it again but we think that $80 would be a fair price (8/10)

Overall: 85/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: This whiskey won our Best Craft Whiskey of 2020 for good reason! It is tasty and unique. We can’t wait to see how this whiskey tastes with some more time in the barrel. We highly recommend trying Still Austin's products and not passing on their limited releases.
