Review #117 Barrell Bourbon Batch 027

Updated: Mar 23, 2021

Distillery: Barrel Craft Spirits

Proof: 115.7

Age: 5 years

Mashbill: Blend of 5,6,8,9,13 and 15 year expressions

BACKGROUND: Barrell Bourbon batch 027 is a blend of fruit and spiced bottles ranging from 5-6 years being sourced from Tennessee and Indiana. Shortly after being blended, 13 & 15 year barrels were added then layered with high rye 9 year barrels to bring more of a spice flavor. After that blends 5 & 8 year wheated bourbons are added to the batch to bring more sweet flavors to the forefront.

NOSE: The nose opens up quite strong filling your nose with a nutty peanut flavor, comparable to sweet peanut brittle. After some swirling of the glass flavors of caramel, brown sugar, and slight oaky vanilla come up on the back end giving it a dessert feel. (20/25)

PALATE: The moment the liquor touches your mouth a thick layer of rich maple vanilla coats your mouth. As your palate adjusts, the back end starts to bring flavors of cracked pepper, tobacco, oak, coming together which marries wonderfully with the sweet opening. (31/40)

FINISH: The finish is actually the best part of batch 027. Very long and dry, but in the perfect way. As you feel the peppery oak on your tastebuds, the dryness becomes more and more prevelant, until the flavors take a turn and show some of the sweet notes of vanilla cream, and caramelized sugar that came with the nose start coming back. (23/25)

VALUE: With a price point of $69.99, I believe this is a very unique bottle with a delightfully extensive variety of flavor from start to finish, I will definitely buy a bottle of this when I see it! (6/10)

Overall: Barrell Batch 027 Is a wonderful mirage of sweet and dry, the perfect combination of young and sweet with old and oaky. This is one of the more complex blends on the market, but that is Barrell’s bread and butter. A wonderful blend of whiskeys of all ages. (80/100)

FINAL THOUGHTS: Barrell Craft Spirits has always pushed the envelope when it comes to unique whiskeys this is no short of that. A wonderful blend of whiskeys of all ages and mash bills coming together to make a delicious combination that can only be truly compared to an infinite bottle. Definitely a cool addition to have in your collection if you are looking for something different.
