BACKGROUND: Horse Soldier Bourbon is a whiskey company based out of St. Petersburg, FL that launched in 2018. Horse Soldier honors the founders of this company as they were the true US Army Green Berets who rode on horse back through the mountains of Afghanistan when the US invaded immediately after 9/11. Horse Soldier has an amazing tasting room in St. Pete called the Urban Stillhouse where they have incredible food and drinks with a perfect environment. Horse Soldier has 3 bourbons on the market and 1 highly limited release. They have a small batch, straight, and cask strength bourbon. This particular whiskey is their reserve cask strength wheated bourbon.

NOSE: There is a nice sweetness and smoothness to this now. Immediately noticeable our butter scotch, maple, vanilla bean, and some oak. It’s very approachable for a cask strength Bourbon. Overall there is a sweet mellowness and approachability to this nose. (22/25)

PALATE: Like the nose, this is smooth and approachable for its cask strength. Also like the nose it’s very sweet with flavors of cinnamon, vanilla, cacao, and barrel char. There is a slight drive drive dryness and chewiness to this whiskey. Overall, it is a sweet, smooth and tasty whiskey. (34/40)

FINISH: The Finish is on the hotter side with the proof making itself known here. There are dryer flavors of all spice, barrel char, oak, and vanilla. It burns a little going down. (20/25)

VALUE: With a $75 SRP this is a little on the pricier side but still not too bad! (6/10)

Overall: 82/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: Horse Soldier Cask Strength Bourbon is a sweet and tasty whiskey that provides a nice punch going down. The team at Horse Soldier are incredible and we can’t wait to see where the brand goes in the future!
