Review #220 Nulu Small Batch Texas Pick

Distillery: Prohibition Craft Spirits sourced from MGP

Proof: 117

Age: NAS (4 to 6 Years)

Mashbill: 75% Corn, 21% Rye, and 4% Malted barley

BACKGROUND: Nulu Bourbon comes from Prohibition Craft Spirits (PCS) where they source their whiskey from MGP in Indiana. PCS was founded in 2016 by Keith Hazelbaker. PCS is a "new kind of Craft Distillery" that produces a lot more than bourbon whiskey, they also have rum, vodka, gin, and reposado tequila aged in bourbon barrels. PCS's Nulu Whiskey is highly sought after for its excellent flavors, smoothness, and proof. Nulu comes in a Single Barrel: Barrel Proof, toasted barrel rye, and reserve straight bourbon. This Reserve is a small batch of bourbon specially selected for the state of Texas.

NOSE: Sweet scents drifted up from the glass in the form of caramel, candied pecans, citrus, and peppermint. The proof hides itself throughout while still providing a prominence to the nose. The nose is slightly lacking in depth but is fantastic. (21/25)

PALATE: Where the nose is lacking in depth the palate picks up for it! Bold and rich notes of cinnamon, pepper, rye spice, oak, and vanilla shine with undertones of milk chocolate and roasted nuts. The proof adds an element of rawness that is very enjoyable as it never burns or takes away from the flavor. (35/40)

FINISH: The finish is medium in length and quite sweet with notes of vanilla, butterscotch, and oak sugars. The flavors are medium in length but the proof goes on for a while (21/25)

VALUE: Nulu Reserve Picks at cask strength have an SRP of $75 which is a very fair price for this whiskey (7/10)

Overall: 84/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: Nulu Reserve Bourbon is a very flavorful bourbon whiskey that has many of the classic sweeter bourbon notes. It is incredibly smooth and flavorful with a sweeter flavor profile and higher proof. We recommend this whiskey to anyone who likes sweeter whiskey with some proof and burn behind it.
