Review #29 Angel's Envy Finished Rye

Updated: Feb 18, 2021

Distillery: Sourced from Louisville Distilling Institute

Proof: 100

Age: 6-7 years

Mashbill: 95% Rye, 5% Malted Barley

BACKGROUND: Angel's Envy Finished Rye is a new release from Angel's Envy for 2020. Angel's Envy sources their whiskey from distilleries in Kentucky and Indiana. This new rye whiskey is sourced from Louisville Distilling Institute and was aged for 6-7 years before being pulled out and put into a Caribbean XO Rum Cask for 18 months, before being blended again and bottled. Angel's Envy only does finished whiskeys and also releases a port finish bourbon and an annual cask strength port finish bourbon.

NOSE: Angel's Envy Finished Rye has a nose that is one of a kind. It is very sweet with scents of fresh gingerbread cookies, maple syrup, caramel, vanilla, marshmellow, sweet fruits, and some baking spices. There is a slight ethanol scent as well but overall this is a very nice smelling whiskey that is incredibly sweet. (23/25)

PALATE: Up front this whiskey has strong notes of brown sugar, molasses and maple that turns into cotton candy and marshmellow as the whiskey sits. There is no rye spice found on this palate. Sweet is an understatement but we feel it is overly sweet. (30/40)

FINISH: The sweet molasses lingers with a sweet brown sugar taste. This blends wonderfully with notes of Caribbean Rum spices, but the finish is still a bit too sweet for our liking (19/25)

VALUE: Angel's Envy Finished Rye carries a high SRP of $80 but is often marked up to around $100. This is definitely a whiskey you should try before you buy as it is VERY sweet. (6/10)

Overall: 75/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: Angel's Envy Finished Rye is a very sweet rye whiskey that is very easy to drink and unique. It carries a pretty expensive SRP so this would make a nice present. This is a great introductory whiskey or a whiskey to crack out with anyone who has a sweet tooth. It would be a great whiskey to help bridge people to the whiskey world from the rum world. We feel as though this is too sweet for us but that doesn't mean it will be for you! Try it out.
