BACKGROUND: Elijah Craig Batch Proof was brought to market in 2013. It is released 3 times per year. Batch C919 was the third batch of 2019 released in September. Elijah Craig bourbon is named for a minister who opened a distillery in Kentucky in 1789. Legend claims that Craig is actually the one who invented the process of aging whiskey in charred barrels after his barn caught fire and burnt his barrels. However, he continued to age the whiskey in those charred barrels and the folks who tasted those whiskeys loved it and he continued to age his whiskey in charred oak barrels.
NOSE: At first sniff is deep and rich notes of toffee, baking spice, oak, leather, and burnt caramel. The age rears its head on the nose with the rich oak. There is no burn at all which is great given the proof. (23/25)
PALATE: This release has classic notes of oak, vanilla, caramel, and rye spice with some heat from the proof. C919 has a very full and rich mouthfeel and is enjoyable to sip on while still being very warming. (35/40)
FINISH: The finish was very long and enveloping. It started with deep and rich notes of white pepper, oak, dried cherry, and rye spice and then exploded with heat from the proof. The proof is not over powering and you can feel it all the way to your stomach. (22/25)
VALUE: With an SRP of $60 this is an incredible buy. It has deep, rich flavors, is age stated at 12 yrs, and sits at a 136.8 proof. It is incredibely smooth and enjoyable. We think these bottles are best priced at $50 but would pay up to $70. (8/10)
Overall: 88/100
FINAL THOUGHTS: The Elijah Craig Barrel Proof releases are always delicious and bold and C919 was no disappointment. It was full of rich and bold classic bourbon flavors. We are huge fans of all of the Elijah Craig whiskeys and are looking forward to the 2020 releases. We highly recommend this whiskey to anyone who enjoys strong whiskey.
