BACKGROUND: Buffalo Trace distillery was an idea by Sazerac owner, Bill Goldring who own Buffalo Trace Distillery. Goldring, thought of an idea to appeal to the Jewish community by producing kosher whiskey in partnership with the Chicago Rabbinical Council (cRc). In 2010, Buffalo Trace deided that they would produce three (3) kosher whiskeys, a wheated bourbon, a ryed bourbon, and a straight rye whiskey. In order to meet passover requirements, the barrels of whiskey were sold to Buffalo Trace Distiller's president, Mark Brown, a non-Jewish executive in a ceremony witnessed by a representative of the cRc. After aging for 7 years, Buffalo Trace bottled these whiskies after cleaning all the bottling lines to ensure no contact was made with non-Kosher spirits. 2020 was the first year for the Kosher line from Buffalo Trace and they will continue to release these whiskies after Passover each year.
NOSE: Buffalo Trace Kosher Rye Recipe has a very similar nose to the standard Buffalo Trace bourbon with a stronger presence of rye spice. Along with the rye spice are notes of dried fruit, vanilla, licorice, oak, and honey. (21/25)
PALATE: Kosher Rye Recipe has a sweeter flavor profile with delicious notes of vanilla, citrus, apple, nutmeg, and cinnamon. There are notes of rye spice and oak that make themselves known as the whiskey sits on your tongue. (33/40)
FINISH: The finish is medium in length and is dominated by rye spice, leather, and charred oak with a slight ethanol burn as it goes down. (20/25)
VALUE: This bottle has a SRP of $40 which fits perfectly. I think this is a delicious bottle that has a fun story behind. I would pay up to $50. (8/10)
Overall: 82/100
FINAL THOUGHTS:
Similar & Slightly Better Whiskey: Milam & Greene Triple Cask
