Review #41 Old Line American Single Malt Whiskey

Updated: Feb 20, 2021

Distillery: Old Line Distillery

Proof: 86

Age: NAS (at least 1 yr)

Mashbill: 100% Pacific Northwest Malted Barley

BACKGROUND: Old Line is a craft distillery based out of Baltimore, MD that make single malt whiskeys and rums. They are founded by two Navy veterans who met while flying EA-6B Prowlers while on active duty and stationed at Naval Air Station Whidbey Island in Washington State. American single malts are neither scotch nor bourbon. They follow many similar guidelines to scotch but also take similar techniques to bourbon. Old Line ages their whiskey in smaller sized barrels which allows their whiskey to age faster than in normal 53 gallon barrels.

NOSE: A full and rich nose which you wouldn't expect for 86 proof. It is dominated by rich notes of maple, deep caramel, sweet vanilla, and toasted brown sugar as well! We love with this nose (23/25)

PALATE: Not as full as the nose but still very tasty. To us it’s smooth and sweet like a wheated bourbon. There are some bitter notes that give off a very light milk chocolate. It reminds me of a salted caramel filled chocolate. It has a lighter oily mouthfeel (33/40)

FINISH: I would say this is medium in length but ultra smooth. There is no oak or spice like a bourbon just some simple and light sweetness. The low proof is prevalent here as it is slightly watery. (21/25)

VALUE: $50 for this bottle is not bad! I would say $40 is where it should sit but I would never feel guilty paying $50 for this. (7/10)

Overall: 84/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: I was pleasantly surprised by this! I was offered this at a friends house and it blew my mind. Super tasty, smooth, and enjoyable! Expect to see more American single malts in our collection! If you see this on your shelf I would buy it and try it out!

Similar & Slightly Better: Green Spot Irish Whiskey

Similar & Equal Whiskey: Russell’s Reserve 10 yr
