Review #75 Jefferson's Reserve Pritchard Hill Cabernet Cask Finished Bourbon

Updated: Feb 21, 2021

Distillery: Sourced from Kentucky Artisan Distillery

Proof: 90.2

Age: NAS

Mashbill: Undisclosed

BACKGROUND: Jefferson's Bourbon is a distillery that does the age old practice of blending, finishing, and additionally aging whiskeys sourced from Kentucky Artisan Distillery. Their whiskeys include Jefferson's, Jefferson's Reserve, and Jefferson's Ocean, with limited releases of Ocean Cask Strength, Twin Oak, Chef's Collaboration, Rum Cask Finished and this Pritchard Hill Cabernet Cask Finished bourbon. This bourbon is their Jefferson's Reserve bourbon that is taken and aged an extra year in Pritchard Hill Cabernet Sauvignon French Oak casks.

NOSE: Dark and deep fruit notes waft up from the glass and they tango with some sweet cherry notes over a bed of oak. The nose really smells like an aged wine and therefore it is very noticeable it is a wine finished whiskey as the main notes are berry and fruit. It is an enjoyable nose but incredibly sweet with no burn! (22/25)

PALATE: As soon as the whiskey touches your tongue you're seduced with sweet and smooth rich dried berries, caramel, and apricots! As with most Jefferson's products, it is quite sweet. As the whiskey lingers, there is a bitterness that arises that we were not fans of. It has a velvety feel and is very smooth and sweet. (33/40)

FINISH: The finish is very short but it has notes of white pepper, dry oak, and more of that bitterness from the palate. (21/25)

VALUE: With an SRP $60 this unique, sweet, and smooth wine finished whiskey is a pretty good buy. We think it is fairly priced when taking into account the cost to get the Pritchard Hill wine barrels. (7/10)

Overall: 83/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: This is a very tasty, smooth, rich, and enjoyable wine finished whiskey. We have shared this with many novice whiskey drinkers, wine fanatics, or rum fans and they all tend to love it. This is one of the best wine finished whiskeys that we have tried and we highly recommend getting yourself a bottle if you also are a fan of wine finished whiskeys.
