Review #96 1792 Sweet Wheat

Distillery: Barton 1792

Proof: 91.2

Age: NAS (Press release said 8 years)

Mashbill: Undisclosed (Wheated)

BACKGROUND: Rather than using their traditional rye based mashbill, 1792 Sweet Wheat uses a softer wheat based bourbon mashbill from Barton. Sweet Wheat is one of the special limited releases from the Barton 1792 distillery along with Single Barrel, Port Finish, Full Proof, Bottled-in-Bond and a 12 Year. Barton 1792 Distillery was established in 1879 and continues today as the oldest fully-operating Distillery in Bardstown, Kentucky.

NOSE: The nose is very full for a 91 proof whiskey. It is very smooth and sweet with notes of bright berries, sweet corn, vanilla, and citrus. I also get some young oak notes. Overall it is sweet, sprite, and summery. (22/25)

PALATE: Up front I got creamy vanilla notes that coated my entire mouth. This subsided into very smooth oak, dried fruit, dry wood, and some roasted nuts. It is one of the creamiest whiskeys I have ever tried. It is incredibly smooth, rich, and creamy with a unique mouthfeel. (35/40)

FINISH: The finish continues with more dry oak notes that are accompanied by peanuts and light cinnamon. The oak really takes over here in a big way. It is on the drier side and leaves a bitter oak flavor. (21/25)

VALUE: 1792 Sweet Wheat has a SRP of $40 which is an excellent value for this tasty wheated bourbon. However, I have seen it marked up for well over $100 which is unfortunate. If you see this for $65 or less I would grab it. (9/10)

Overall: 87/100

FINAL THOUGHTS: 1792 Sweet Wheat is an incredible tasty and smooth bourbon whiskey that is delicate, balanced, and sweet. It has a rich creaminess to it that is hard to find in a lot of whiskeys. I thoroughly enjoyed it and will be comparing it blind with some other big hitters in the wheated bourbon game. I strongly recommend this anyone who enjoys rich wheated or smooth whiskeys. Excellent for a night cap on a warm evening.
